IOP Program

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Infinity Malibu

There’s no doubt: The return to work, school, and family commitments challenge addiction recovery in a new way. Without structure and support, it is hard to maintain the change you have worked so hard to achieve. Fortunately, you don’t have to make the transition entirely on your own. Participants in our outpatient programs (IOPs) receive clinical guidance while practicing essential recovery skills within the context of a safe, inviting community.

IOPs offer a flexible treatment alternative for those that need additional support as they move from a residential or partial hospitalization program. In addition, IOPs may be the right choice for those entering addiction treatment for the first time but are unable to commit to a more rigorous program due to cost restraints or work and family obligations. Within our family of treatment centers at New Vista Behavioral Health, we offer IOP options that gives our clients the ability to tailor this stage of treatment to their unique needs, whether they require treatment for an addiction alone or for co- occurring disorders.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient

Inpatient or residential treatment and IOP have both similarities and differences to consider when you are choosing the right program for you. Some of the likenesses between the two programs include:

  • Access to highly qualified therapists and treatment specialists
  • Professional assessment before treatment to create the right treatment for you
  • Programs are appropriate for both addictions and co-occurring disorders
  • Variety of therapy options to personalize your treatment plan to your needs
  • Ongoing support as you work through reasons behind your addiction and your introduction to a sober lifestyle
  • Additional services to help clients find employment, return to the academic world and restore family relationships

While there are many common characteristics between inpatient and outpatient programs, there are some distinct differences as well, including:

  • Residential is a daily, structured program where residents live for an extended period
  • Residential programs provide full-time support and therapy to move clients to a healthy recovery path
  • IOP provides flexibility so that clients can work IOP sessions around work and family obligations
  • IOP offers therapy a few hours a day, three to five days a week
  • IOP gives clients the ability to transition to their daily lives while keeping their treatment support

At Infinity Malibu, we are dedicated to helping you find the best program for your needs and situation. Our counselors are prepared to offer you a complete assessment and make the right recommendations for you.

Goals for IOP

The goals for IOP are very similar to the aims of any other addiction treatment program. While the primary focus of the IOP is to achieve and maintain abstinence and long-term sobriety, other goals are addressed along the way:

  • Understanding the reasons that the substance abuse began
  • Establish a support network to help the individual remain on the recovery path
  • Identify mental illnesses or psychological problems contributing to the addiction
  • Forming positive behaviors and lifestyles to replace self-destructive tendencies
  • Teach problem-solving and coping skills with opportunities to practice them in the real world
  • Introduce structure and discipline that helps clients maintain a successful recovery path

Through a variety of therapies and treatment modalities, clients can explore each of these goals to the fullest, ensuring they can bring them to fruition once their IOP is completed. From week to week the daily workshop and process groups teach patients that genuine, lasting change is possible Practical topics included in our IOP may include but are not limited to, the following:

  • Becoming self-sufficient
  • Prioritizing self-care
  • Establishing constructive boundaries
  • Building trust within the context of healthy relationships
  • Developing somatic awareness
  • Exploring healthy coping strategies

Whether IOP is your primary treatment or one step in your recovery process, you will receive all the tools necessary to achieve a healthy, sober lifestyle.

Features of IOP

IOP is an integral part of a comprehensive continuum of care, affording the clients the opportunity to apply newly-learned coping skills in a secure, real-life context. Studies show that men and women who participate in IOPs have a lower risk for drug or alcohol relapse. In fact, a study published in Psychiatric Services in June 2014 found that an IOP can be as effective as a residential treatment for most individuals, with comparable outcomes for both programs.

New Vista Behavioral Health, the parent company of Infinity Malibu, offers flexible IOP options, with both daytime and evening workshops that allow our clients to work with jobs, school and family responsibilities. Gender-specific sessions are available, and 12-step groups are encouraged to help our clients get the support they need both during the program and afterward. In addition, our dual- diagnosis clients can continue treatment for coexisting mental health issues while taking advantage of individualized outpatient treatment programs. Our goal is to make your IOP a helpful stepping stone from residential treatment to sober living if you are working through the continuum of care with us.

Some of the features of the IOP include:

  • Case management sessions
  • Ongoing medication management for dual diagnoses
  • Daily reflection times
  • Yoga & meditation
  • Lessons in mindfulness
  • Stress management training
  • Process groups
  • Therapy & clinical supervision
  • Family counseling
  • Alumni meetings

Intensive outpatient therapy allows clients to live comfortably at home while continuing to strengthen their sobriety resolve and redirect their lives. IOPs are also a viable option for men and women unable to miss work or family obligations to stay at our world-class residential treatment centers. Our extensive offering of therapies and services allows you to choose the modalities that will work the best for you, to ensure the best possible outcome from your treatment process.
